Think You Don’t Have Allergies? Think again!

Think You Don’t Have Allergies? Think again! | Sinus & Snoring Specialists

Many patients have the impression that they don’t have allergy symptoms. They think that allergy always causes sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and a runny nose. This is actually called the “acute phase” of allergy sensitivity. Within seconds after an exposure the patient gets these complaints. They are mainly caused when the mucus membranes release histamine in to the tissue. That’s why an “anti-histamine” can be taken to reduce these symptoms.

Signs You Have Allergies Too!

Many patients have very little of these acute phase symptoms. Instead they suffer from the “delayed phase” of allergy sensitivity. In this reaction the white blood cells in the blood stream leave the blood stream and go in to the tissues in the nose. This expands the nasal tissues producing many symptoms:

  • The turbinate tissue in the nose that filters the air becomes progressively larger producing congestion, mouth breathing, snoring, daytime fatigue, and sleep apnea.
  • The sinus outflow tracts become swollen closed producing sinus pressure, sinus infections, and triggering migraines.
  • The lining of the eustachian tube in the back of the nose becomes swollen and therefore it does not clear the ear effectively. This causes ear pressure, ear popping, middle ear fluid, ear infections, hearing loss, and dizziness.
  • The mouth breathing can cause a chronic sore throat, throat clearing, cough, and hoarseness.

The truth is the patient’s allergy complaint may not be about allergies at all.

In our practice we work hard to make you well and keep you well. Frequently this involves simple office procedures to correct sinus, snoring, and sleep apnea issues. Along with this correction we always advise having allergy testing in our allergy center. This testing will show us if the patient has significant allergies. Allergy drop therapy is then used to keep the patient well by preventing the swelling of the nasal lining and keeping the tissues healthy. This treatment preserves our great results.
