Hearing loss of one family member can impact the dynamics of the entire family. The frustration in everyday communication and the withdrawal that takes place when communication is too difficult and can cause conflict within relationships. Research has demonstrated that untreated hearing loss can have a significant adverse affect on general health, this can then negatively influence family relationships.
Hearing loss will impact communication for a variety of reasons.
1. Volume – missing specific speech sounds that are important for understanding.
2. Type of Hearing Loss – trouble hearing foreign accents or difficultly understanding when there is background noise.

Some hearing loss can be treated medically or surgically with dramatic improvement in the hearing. However, a large percentage of hearing loss is treated by other methods. Sometimes something as simple as communication strategies are adequate for improved communication.
Assistive Listening Devices (ALD) are also utilized. An example here would be an amplifier for a telephone or television. Hearing instruments are becoming more mainstream than ever before.
The hearing instruments and process to fit the hearing instrument are vastly different than they were just a few years ago. Hearing aid satisfaction has increase significantly over the plat seven years . The newest technology is comfortable, barely visible and very effective.
The average person waits approximately seven years from the time they notice trouble hearing until they finally do something about it. With today’s technology and processes, there is no reason to put off finding a solution to your hearing needs.
