There are a lot of myths about septoplasty that may make you nervous about the procedure. Many of these are simply not true, especially at Sinus and Snoring Specialists where septoplasty is a simple in-office procedure with an easy recovery.

Read below to find out the myths (and the truth!) about septoplasty at our clinic.

MYTH 1: SEPTOPLASTY IS PAINFUL.

Septoplasty is essentially a painless procedure. Most patients at our clinic require little to no pain medication after their procedure. You may have tenderness if your septum is bumped but this is only temporary as it is healing. (Just make sure to protect your nose post-op from dogs and little kids!)

MYTH 2: SEPTOPLASTY REQUIRES SPLINTING AND PACKING.

Septoplasty at Sinus and Snoring Specialists requires NO splinting or packing. Dr. Slaughter’s septoplasty technique is extremely effective and does not require any foreign objects in the nose after the procedure. You will not require any painful packing removal like lots of other septoplasty procedures.

MYTH 3: SEPTOPLASTY IS GOING TO CHANGE THE WAY I LOOK

Septoplasty is only fixing the internal airway and will not change the way your nose looks on the outside. It will simply improve your airway so you can breathe much better. If you desire an external cosmetic correction, that is called rhinoplasty (another procedure that is performed in our office).

MYTH 4: SEPTOPLASTY WILL LEAVE ME BRUISED AND SWOLLEN.

Dr. Slaughter’s septoplasty technique will NEVER cause bruising or external swelling around the nose. You may experience some mild swelling internally which is to be expected after a nasal procedure, but it will dissipate after 1-2 weeks.

MYTH 5: SEPTOPLASTY IS AN INVASIVE SURGERY THAT TAKES HOURS TO COMPLETE.

At Sinus and Snoring Specialists, a septoplasty is often performed in our office under a twilight sedation that takes approximately 15 minutes. Dr. Slaughter has perfected his technique for septoplasty which makes it quick and effective with a faster recovery time.
