The Causes Of Itchy Ears

Ear itching is a common and often frustrating complaint. Several conditions can cause it, and treatment often depends on the underlying cause. The following are some of the most frequent causes of ear itching, and how to address them.

  1. Ear Infections – If there is itching associated with pain or drainage from the ear, an outer ear infection (also called otitis externa) is a possibility. Also known as “swimmer’s ear,” this infection affects the ear canal and, in more severe cases, may extend to the outer ear (helix). This can happen due to trauma to the skin of the ear canal or by either bacteria or fungi. Treatment typically includes prescription ear drops, and in more severe cases, oral antibiotics may also be needed. Thorough cleaning of the ear by an ENT specialist or other healthcare professional is often an important part of treatment.
  2. Earwax – Something as simple as excessive earwax can cause itching. If the earwax is severe enough, it can cause a sensation of ear pressure, decreased hearing, and even vertigo. Excessive earwax can also cause the buildup of skin debris in the ear canal and increase the chance of outer ear infections. Ideally, treatment involves seeing an ear professional for cleaning if the impaction is severe.
  3. Allergies – Itchy ears can be one of the manifestations of allergies. In this case, associated symptoms can include nasal congestion, postnasal drip, or hives. Contact dermatitis of the ears can also result from exposure to cosmetics or jewelry. Addressing allergies with medications or immunotherapy, or identifying offending agents, can improve the ear itching.
  4. Chronic Otitis Externa – In some cases, ear itching can be a result of chronic skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. This can result in ear canal skin that is thin and scaly, which makes itching more likely. It can also increase the risk of skin infections. Proper diagnosis is important. Steroid ear drops can be very helpful in the short term, and immunotherapy can be beneficial if the chronic otitis externa is driven by an underlying allergy.
  5. Hearing Aids – On occasion, patients with hearing aids may note itching. This can be a reaction to the earpiece material or coating, though it may also be due to the buildup of wax or moisture behind the earpiece. Getting this problem evaluated by an ENT provider or your hearing aid specialist can offer relief.
